TOSHIBA Grants Worldwide Award to Local Company for Charity Project With St. Joseph's Villa

November 25, 2008 The Toshiba Corporation in Japan has selected a Rochester-headquartered company for a worldwide corporate citizenship award called the ASHITA award. The award will be given to Toshiba Business Solutions New York (TBSNY), 150 Metro Park, Rochester, at the 4th annual ASHITA Award ceremony in Tokyo, December 10, 2008.

In Japanese, ASHITA means tomorrow, and the theme behind the award is that through corporate social responsibility programs, companies can all help create a better tomorrow. (For more on the ASHITA award, go to www.toshiba.co.jp/social/en/ashita_award/index.htm)

"We believe in commitment to the community on a corporate level, and I'm honored to have my company's efforts recognized in this capacity," said TBSNY President Steven Sauer.

Of the 1,395 worldwide submissions this year, 14 activities were selected as ASHITA award winners. TBSNY is one of just two companies selected from the North & South America region: Remaining awards will be given to companies located in Japan, China, and Europe. The award consists of a plaque and $1,000 prize.

TBSNY was selected for this award for its intimate involvement with St. Josephs Villa, Rochester, NY. To help enrich the lives of at-risk youth, TBSNY employees partnered with the Villa: With technology as a theme, they created and installed a multi-media room for educational and entertainment purposes.

Items donated by TBSNY, and then installed by employees, included a projector, screen, computer, video camera, and editing software. Some employees then donated time teaching students how to make their own movies, and others donated DVDs for a school media library. In addition, employees adopted a family during the holidays and purchased gifts and food for two teenage children and their single mom.

"We are grateful for the level of commitment TBSNY has displayed by donating products and services time and time again," said St. Joseph's Villa President/CEO Roger Battaglia. "Their generosity in time, talent and resources has given our students many of the same opportunities as teens in other local schools."

Earlier this year, this same project earned TBSNY $10,000 from Toshiba America Business Solutions (TABS) in Irvine, California, at its community stewardship activity awards. The money was donated back to St. Joseph's Villa this summer.

For TBSNY, it's not just about donating money to a not-for-profit organization.

"We believe in finding activities that allow our employees a chance to give back, and we also support the various organizations our employees are already involved in," Sauer said, noting that the company and the Villa are already discussing a new partnership activity to benefit the students for some time this winter.

Toshiba Business Solutions is a $60 million copier company with headquarters in Rochester, and offices in Buffalo, Syracuse, Newburgh, NY, and Wixon, Michigan.
